| How it works | Testosterone is a steroid hormone the body makes from cholesterol. In men it is made mostly in the testicles, on a signal from the brain. Women make smaller amounts in the ovaries and adrenal glands. It works by attaching to the testosterone receptor inside cells, which changes which genes are switched on. The body turns some of it into two other hormones. One is DHT, a stronger form that drives much of its effect on scalp hair and the prostate. The other is estrogen, which drives much of its effect on bone, mood and sex drive in men. Taking testosterone tells the brain to stop sending its own signals to the testicles.
