Is ABT-737 legal in Australia?

The lab parent of navitoclax, used in mice to clear worn-out cells. Nobody has ever been given ABT-737 in a published study. It does not get absorbed when swallowed, so a pill version, navitoclax, was made and tested in people instead.

ABT-737 blocks three proteins that keep cells alive: BCL-2, BCL-xL and BCL-w. Cells that lean on them die.

How it works: Shown in cells and in mice: ABT-737 sits in a pocket on BCL-2, BCL-xL and BCL-w. That frees other proteins that tell the cell to die.

Approval history: Not approved, and not being developed for people. Animal or lab only, with no registered human study. Its close cousin in pill form, navitoclax, reached early safety studies and mid-stage studies in cancer, and is also unapproved.

Registers or lists medicines and health products on the ARTG, its official register. It also sorts substances into schedules in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only). So having them without a prescription, or importing them for yourself, is restricted. That is true even when no product is registered.

Whether ABT-737 is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in Australia. Before you compete or get tested, look up ABT-737 by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
