What Acarbose is
An old, cheap diabetes pill that slows how fast starch turns into sugar. In people, a large heart study found no heart benefit, and it has never been tested for ageing. In the US government's mouse program, it made male mice live 6 to 22 percent longer.
Acarbose blocks the gut enzymes that break starch down into sugar. So carbs travel further down the gut, and the blood sugar spike after a meal is flattened.
How it works: It blocks gut enzymes called alpha-glucosidases, so complex carbs break down more slowly and blood sugar rises less after a meal. The undigested carbs reach the large bowel, where gut bacteria ferment them.
Approval history: Approved for type 2 diabetes. The original US brand was discontinued and generic versions are sold. In Canada, the original brand was taken off the market in 2023, and a generic is available.
