What this means
- 01
No product containing Amylin is approved by TGA for any use in Australia, so nothing on the market is authorized for people.
- 02
"Research use only" is a vendor label, not a legal category that permits human use. It does not exempt a product from medicines law.
- 03
Importing, supplying or promoting it for human use can fall under medicines legislation in Australia. This page is general information, not legal advice.
What Amylin is
Co-released with insulin from the same beta cell, and the parent ligand of cagrilintide and CagriSema. Native human amylin clumps into amyloid, which is why it can never be a drug.
Amylin is secreted alongside insulin from the pancreatic beta cell in a roughly fixed ratio, which has a consequence people miss: someone with type 1 diabetes is deficient in two hormones, not one. It slows gastric emptying, suppresses glucagon after a meal, and produces satiation through the area postrema in the brainstem.
Mechanism: Acts at amylin receptors, which are not dedicated receptors at all but the calcitonin receptor in complex with a receptor activity-modifying protein. RAMP1, RAMP2 or RAMP3 give AMY1, AMY2 and AMY3 respectively, and that accessory-protein mechanism is why amylin pharmacology overlaps with calcitonin.
Regulatory history: Native amylin is not a drug. Its approved analogue pramlintide (Symlin) is listed as Discontinued in Drugs@FDA as of September 2026. Cagrilintide is investigational, in phase 3 combined with semaglutide.
How TGA treats this kind of product
Registers or lists therapeutic goods on the ARTG and schedules substances in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only), so possession without a prescription and personal importation are restricted even when no product is registered.
The classification above is the The Longevity Archive reading of Therapeutic Goods Administration listings for Amylin at the reviewed date, not a legal opinion. Rules change, and importing, prescribing and possessing a compound can each be treated differently. Check the regulator directly before acting on anything here.
