Is CGRP legal in Australia?

CGRP is a peptide your body makes. It is one of the best-proven drug targets for migraine: four approved antibody shots and a group of pills called gepants all work by blocking it. When researchers gave CGRP itself to 13 migraine patients, 10 got a migraine-like attack. Nobody did on a dummy drip.

CGRP is on this site for the opposite of the usual reason. Nobody should think about taking it.

How it works: Proven, and proven from both ends, which is rare. CGRP is released by the nerve that carries pain from the face and head.

Approval history: CGRP is a peptide the body makes. It is not a medicine, so it has no FDA status. Several drugs aimed at it are FDA-approved. Some are lab-made antibodies: erenumab, fremanezumab, galcanezumab and eptinezumab. Others are pills called gepants, including ubrogepant, rimegepant, atogepant and zavegepant. Those approvals belong to those drugs, and they all block CGRP. None of them gives you CGRP.

Registers or lists medicines and health products on the ARTG, its official register. It also sorts substances into schedules in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only). So having them without a prescription, or importing them for yourself, is restricted. That is true even when no product is registered.

Whether CGRP is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in Australia. Before you compete or get tested, look up CGRP by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
