Is Clenbuterol legal in Australia?

The first proper human study, in 2025, found two weeks of clenbuterol added 0.91 kg of lean mass, did nothing to fat, and cut fitness (the most oxygen the body can use) by 7 percent. It is not approved for people in the United States. It has poisoned people in outbreaks, from tainted meat and from heroin cut with it.

Clenbuterol is a long-acting drug that opens the airways by switching on beta-2 receptors. A few countries license it for people with breathing problems.

How it works: It switches on beta-2 receptors. In muscle, that sets off a chain of signals inside the cell.

Approval history: Not approved for human use in the United States, at any dose or for any use. Its only US approval is for animals, as a drug that opens the airways in horses. Some other countries license it for people, to open the airways. WADA, the world anti-doping agency, bans it in sport as a muscle-building drug.

Registers or lists medicines and health products on the ARTG, its official register. It also sorts substances into schedules in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only). So having them without a prescription, or importing them for yourself, is restricted. That is true even when no product is registered.

Whether Clenbuterol is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in Australia. Before you compete or get tested, look up Clenbuterol by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
