Is DHEA legal in Canada?
Written by Aaron CuhaReviewed Sep 2026
Direct answer
DHEA is available in Canada only through a prescriber, classified as "Prescription only". It is not sold over the counter; use sits within a clinician's judgment, not a marketing approval. Vials sold "for research use only" fall outside that route; the label does not make human use lawful. On the evidence, no human study is cited on its profile.

What this means
- 01
DHEA reaches patients in Canada only through a prescriber, typically for a narrow labeled use or via a compounding pharmacy under a prescription.
- 02
That route depends on a clinician's judgment and, for compounded products, on the pharmacy's own quality controls rather than a product-level marketing approval.
- 03
Buying it online "for research use only" is outside that route, and the label does not make human use lawful.
What DHEA is
The hormone whose decline with age is the most-cited reason to supplement it, tested repeatedly in randomised trials, and mostly unimpressive outside two specific populations.
DHEA is the most abundant circulating steroid in the human body and its levels fall steeply from the twenties onward, which is why it became the original anti-ageing hormone supplement. It is also the clearest case on this site of the pattern the whole site argues against: a hormone declines with age, therefore replacing it should reverse ageing, therefore sell it.
Mechanism: A 19-carbon steroid produced mainly by the adrenal cortex, circulating largely as the sulphate DHEA-S. It has weak direct androgen receptor activity and acts mostly as a precursor, converted in peripheral tissues into testosterone and then oestradiol.
Regulatory history: Sold as a dietary supplement in the United States. Separately, prasterone is an FDA-approved prescription vaginal insert for moderate to severe dyspareunia due to menopausal vulvar and vaginal atrophy. It is banned in sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
How Health Canada treats this kind of product
Authorises drugs for sale through a Notice of Compliance and Drug Identification Number. A compound that is not authorised for sale cannot lawfully be sold for human use, and personal importation of prescription drugs is limited.
The classification above is the The Longevity Archive reading of Health Canada, Health Products and Food Branch listings for DHEA at the reviewed date, not a legal opinion. Rules change, and importing, prescribing and possessing a compound can each be treated differently. Check the regulator directly before acting on anything here.
