Direct answer
No. GDF11 is not an approved medicine in the United States; its classification is "Not a drug; endogenous hormone and research infusion peptide". Nothing containing it is authorized for any use in people. Vials labeled "for research use only" are not exempt: that label does not make human use lawful. On the evidence, 1 human study is cited on its profile.

What this means
- 01
No product containing GDF11 is approved by FDA for any use in the United States, so nothing on the market is authorized for people.
- 02
"Research use only" is a vendor label, not a legal category that permits human use. It does not exempt a product from medicines law.
- 03
Importing, supplying or promoting it for human use can fall under medicines legislation in the United States. This page is general information, not legal advice.
What GDF11 is
The young blood factor. Two famous 2013 and 2014 papers said it declines with age and rejuvenates. The human assay built to measure it properly found it does not decline, and that higher levels track with frailty.
GDF11 is the compound behind the young blood story. In 2013 a Cell paper identified it as a circulating factor that falls with age and whose restoration reversed age-related cardiac enlargement in mice.
Mechanism: Signals through activin type II receptors and SMAD2/3, the same axis as myostatin, and is more potent than myostatin at inducing SMAD2 phosphorylation in myocardium. That receptor sharing plus the near-identical mature domain is not a curiosity: it is the direct cause of the measurement dispute, because reagents and assays struggle to tell the two apart.
Regulatory history: Not an approved drug. No human trial of GDF11 administration has ever been run.
How FDA treats this kind of product
Approves prescription drugs by indication and polices unapproved products, including peptides sold online. Compounding pharmacies may prepare some compounds under a prescription when the FDA places them on a permitted bulk-substances category.
The classification above is the The Longevity Archive reading of U.S. Food and Drug Administration listings for GDF11 at the reviewed date, not a legal opinion. Rules change, and importing, prescribing and possessing a compound can each be treated differently. Check the regulator directly before acting on anything here.
