Is Insulin legal in Australia?

Insulin is the hormone that keeps people with type 1 diabetes alive. It is the most tested peptide in medicine. Those big studies are just as clear about the costs. In a study of 12,537 people, dangerous low blood sugar happened about three times as often on insulin, 1.00 against 0.31 events per 100 people per year. People on insulin gained 1.6 kg, while the others lost 0.5 kg.

Insulin is a hormone made of two chains, one 21 building blocks long and one 30, held together by chemical bridges. The pancreas makes it.

How it works: In people, insulin docks on the insulin receptor. That pushes sugar into muscle and fat.

Approval history: Approved and in wide use. Checked on 11 September 2026 through openFDA: HUMULIN R (lab-made human insulin, BLA 018780, Lilly) approved 28 October 1982; HUMALOG (insulin lispro, BLA 020563) approved 14 June 1996; LANTUS (insulin glargine, BLA 021081) approved 20 April 2000; TRESIBA (insulin degludec, BLA 203314) approved 25 September 2015; AFREZZA (inhaled insulin, BLA 022472) approved 27 June 2014. Some human insulin products, including HUMULIN R and NOVOLIN R vials, are listed Over-the-counter in the FDA drug database (Drugs@FDA). The newer modified insulins (analogues) are Prescription.

Registers or lists medicines and health products on the ARTG, its official register. It also sorts substances into schedules in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only). So having them without a prescription, or importing them for yourself, is restricted. That is true even when no product is registered.

Whether Insulin is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in Australia. Before you compete or get tested, look up Insulin by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
