A thirty year old HIV and hepatitis B pill. Some scientists think old gene fragments waking up in our DNA drive the constant low-level inflammation of ageing, and this drug might block them. The only ageing-type study in people gave it to 12 people with early Alzheimer's. There was no comparison group.
About 40 percent of human DNA is made of old gene fragments that can copy themselves. The main ones are called LINE-1, or jumping genes.
How it works: Inside cells, lamivudine turns into a fake DNA building block. When a copying enzyme called reverse transcriptase picks it up, the DNA chain stops growing.
