What MCT oil is
Fed to mice from 4 months of age, it did not change how long they lived, in either sex. A review pooled 13 human studies with 749 people. Swapping regular fats for MCTs led to 0.51 kg more weight loss. That is a real effect, and a small one.
MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides. These fats have shorter chains than most fats, eight to twelve carbons long, mostly caprylic and capric acid.
How it works: MCT oil is made of fats with medium-length chains, mostly 8 and 10 carbons. These fats mix with water better than normal fats.
Approval history: A widely used food ingredient. It is also the base of a medical food sold for Alzheimer's disease. Not an approved drug and not approved to treat anything.
