What Mibavademab is
It reduced weight only in people whose leptin was already low, below 8 ng/mL, and did nothing in those with higher leptin. A rare case of a drug that identified who it is for.
Leptin is the hormone fat tissue uses to tell the brain how much fat there is. In the rare people who make none, giving it back is transformative.
Mechanism: A fully human monoclonal antibody that activates the human leptin receptor, LEPR, in the absence or presence of leptin. That distinguishes it from metreleptin, which is recombinant leptin and therefore useless where the receptor is unresponsive or where neutralising antibodies to leptin have developed.
Regulatory history: Investigational. Not approved. One phase 2 record carries status TERMINATED.
How MHRA treats this kind of product
Licenses medicines for the UK market. A compound without a marketing authorisation is an unlicensed medicine, which can only lawfully be supplied for human use through a prescriber under the specials scheme, not sold as a research product.
The classification above is the The Longevity Archive reading of Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency listings for Mibavademab at the reviewed date, not a legal opinion. Rules change, and importing, prescribing and possessing a compound can each be treated differently. Check the regulator directly before acting on anything here.
