Is Rilmenidine legal in Australia?

A European blood pressure pill that makes tiny worms live longer. In mice, the results are worse than nothing. It did what it was meant to do inside cells in two mouse models of a muscle-wasting nerve disease, and both groups of mice got worse. In people, there is one small safety study and no ageing data.

Rilmenidine is a blood pressure pill sold in France and some other European countries. It works on a spot in the brain that helps set blood pressure.

How it works: It acts on a spot in the brain that helps control blood pressure. It lowers blood pressure with less sleepiness than clonidine, an older pill of the same kind.

Approval history: Not approved in the United States. Rilmenidine is made by Servier. It is licensed as a blood pressure drug in France and several other European countries, under the names Hyperium, Tenaxum, Albarel and Iterium.

Registers or lists medicines and health products on the ARTG, its official register. It also sorts substances into schedules in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only). So having them without a prescription, or importing them for yourself, is restricted. That is true even when no product is registered.

Whether Rilmenidine is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in Australia. Before you compete or get tested, look up Rilmenidine by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
