Is SHLP2 legal in Australia?
Written by Aaron CuhaReviewed Sep 2026
Direct answer
No. SHLP2 is not an approved medicine in Australia; its classification is "Not a medicine; endogenous signalling molecule". Nothing containing it is authorized for any use in people. Vials labeled "for research use only" are not exempt: that label does not make human use lawful. On the evidence, 2 human studies are cited on its profile.

What this means
- 01
No product containing SHLP2 is approved by TGA for any use in Australia, so nothing on the market is authorized for people.
- 02
"Research use only" is a vendor label, not a legal category that permits human use. It does not exempt a product from medicines law.
- 03
Importing, supplying or promoting it for human use can fall under medicines legislation in Australia. This page is general information, not legal advice.
What SHLP2 is
A mitochondrial-derived peptide with an identified receptor, a mouse obesity result and a human genetic association with protection against Parkinson's disease. It has never been administered to a person, and no trial is registered.
In 2016 a search of the same stretch of mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA that encodes humanin turned up six more short open reading frames. Those became SHLP1 through SHLP6, the small humanin-like peptides.
Mechanism: Encoded in the mitochondrial genome, in the 16S rRNA region, and released to act as a signalling peptide. The identified receptor is CXCR7, an atypical chemokine receptor.
Regulatory history: Not approved, not in development as a drug in any public filing, and with no investigational new drug programme located. It is an endogenous peptide that people can measure in plasma, not a product.
How TGA treats this kind of product
Registers or lists therapeutic goods on the ARTG and schedules substances in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only), so possession without a prescription and personal importation are restricted even when no product is registered.
The classification above is the The Longevity Archive reading of Therapeutic Goods Administration listings for SHLP2 at the reviewed date, not a legal opinion. Rules change, and importing, prescribing and possessing a compound can each be treated differently. Check the regulator directly before acting on anything here.

Is SHLP2 legal in Australia?
Note: Endogenous peptide. Not on the ARTG.
Can I buy SHLP2 in Australia?
No approved product exists to buy. In Australia SHLP2 is classified as "Not a medicine; endogenous signalling molecule", so there is no licensed pharmacy product. Vendors selling it "for research use only" are not selling it for human use, and that label does not change its legal status. This site does not list or recommend vendors. Note: Endogenous peptide. Not on the ARTG.
Is SHLP2 TGA approved?
No. In Australia SHLP2 is classified as "Not a medicine; endogenous signalling molecule", which is not a TGA marketing approval. For comparison, the US FDA status is: Not approved, not in development as a drug in any public filing, and with no investigational new drug programme located. It is an endogenous peptide that people can measure in plasma, not a product.. On the evidence, 2 human studies are cited on its profile.
