What this means
- 01
No product containing SRT2104 is approved by FDA for any use in the United States, so nothing on the market is authorized for people.
- 02
"Research use only" is a vendor label, not a legal category that permits human use. It does not exempt a product from medicines law.
- 03
Importing, supplying or promoting it for human use can fall under medicines legislation in the United States. This page is general information, not legal advice.
What SRT2104 is
The sirtuin-activating drug that actually reached randomised human trials, built to succeed where resveratrol's potency failed. Its human results were modest and it did not advance.
Sirtuins were the biggest idea in longevity biology in the 2000s, and resveratrol was supposed to be the drug. When resveratrol turned out to be too weak and too poorly absorbed, the response was to build purpose-designed sirtuin-activating compounds that were orders of magnitude more potent.
Mechanism: Designed as a sirtuin-activating compound targeting SIRT1, an NAD-dependent protein deacetylase. SIRT1 deacetylates targets including PGC-1alpha, FOXO transcription factors and p53, and it was proposed as a mediator of dietary restriction benefits.
Regulatory history: Never approved. The programme did not advance to a marketed product.
How FDA treats this kind of product
Approves prescription drugs by indication and polices unapproved products, including peptides sold online. Compounding pharmacies may prepare some compounds under a prescription when the FDA places them on a permitted bulk-substances category.
The classification above is the The Longevity Archive reading of U.S. Food and Drug Administration listings for SRT2104 at the reviewed date, not a legal opinion. Rules change, and importing, prescribing and possessing a compound can each be treated differently. Check the regulator directly before acting on anything here.
