Is TIMP2 legal in Australia?

A protein found in high amounts in human umbilical cord blood. In old mice, it restored how the memory centre of the brain adapts, and their memory with it. It is already measured in people, as a warning sign of kidney injury, but has never been given to anyone.

TIMP2 has never been given to a person, for anything. What exists in the human record is measurement, and quite a lot of it, in a completely different field of medicine.

How it works: In mice, TIMP2 given through the body gets into the brain. It helps connections in the memory centre adapt and improves the kind of memory that centre handles.

Approval history: Not approved as a treatment anywhere, and never given to a person. Hospitals measure TIMP-2, together with IGFBP7, in a lab test that flags the risk of sudden kidney injury. That is a test, not a treatment.

Registers or lists medicines and health products on the ARTG, its official register. It also sorts substances into schedules in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only). So having them without a prescription, or importing them for yourself, is restricted. That is true even when no product is registered.

Whether TIMP2 is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in Australia. Before you compete or get tested, look up TIMP2 by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
