Is Triptorelin legal in Australia?

A hormone-lowering shot approved in the US in 2000 for advanced prostate cancer, and in 2017 for children who start puberty far too early. In a pooled look at 920 men, about nine in ten kept testosterone below 20 ng/dL from month 3 on. It causes a short burst of testosterone in the first days. That burst is the reason the blocker drugs exist.

Triptorelin is a man-made copy of GnRH, a hormone from the brain, ten building blocks long. GnRH tells the pituitary gland to release the hormones that drive the testes and ovaries.

How it works: The body releases GnRH in pulses, and the receptor needs that rhythm to keep working. A slow-release shot keeps the receptor switched on all the time instead.

Approval history: FDA-approved. Trelstar was approved under NDA 020715 on 15 June 2000, to control (not cure) advanced prostate cancer. More versions were approved in 2001 and 2010. Triptodur was approved under NDA 208956 on 29 June 2017 for puberty that starts too early because of a signal from the brain, in children aged two and older. Not approved in the United States for endometriosis, for fertility treatment, or for any use in healthy adults.

Registers or lists medicines and health products on the ARTG, its official register. It also sorts substances into schedules in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only). So having them without a prescription, or importing them for yourself, is restricted. That is true even when no product is registered.

Whether Triptorelin is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in Australia. Before you compete or get tested, look up Triptorelin by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
