Is BGM0504 legal in the United Kingdom?

A drug built from tirzepatide. In a mid-stage study of 64 people, it lowered average blood sugar and weight more than semaglutide 1 mg. Its large final-stage weight-loss result, often quoted as 19.3 percent, exists only as a company press release. It has not been published.

BGM0504 comes from BrightGene Bio-Medical in Suzhou. It is openly built from tirzepatide, and the design paper says so.

How it works: It works on two gut hormone switches, GLP-1 and GIP. That is the same pair tirzepatide works on, and the drug is built from tirzepatide.

Approval history: Not approved anywhere. Several final-stage studies are signing up patients in China and Indonesia, and a tablet version is in early safety studies. The final-stage obesity result announced in May 2026 had not been published in a checked medical journal when we reviewed it.

Licenses medicines for sale in the UK. A compound without a licence to be sold (a marketing authorisation) is an unlicensed medicine. The law only lets it reach people through a prescriber, under the specials scheme (unlicensed medicines made for one patient's needs). It cannot be sold as a research product.

Whether BGM0504 is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in the United Kingdom. Before you compete or get tested, look up BGM0504 by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
