Is Carnosine legal in Australia?

A two-part molecule the body makes itself, sold as an anti-ageing supplement. It is not approved anywhere for anything. Its largest study gave 299 people 2 g a day or a dummy pill. On every fitness test, people on the dummy pill did just as well overall. A couple of wins turned up only in small age and sex groups. An enzyme in the blood breaks down most of a carnosine pill before it reaches muscle. That is why the real evidence sits with beta-alanine instead.

Carnosine is a small molecule made of two building blocks, beta-alanine and histidine. Your body makes it and stores it in muscle and brain.

How it works: Inside cells, carnosine soaks up acid. That is why muscle, where hard effort makes acid, is packed with it.

Approval history: Not an approved drug anywhere. In the United States carnosine is sold as a dietary supplement. That means the FDA has not checked whether it works, and it cannot legally be sold as treating or preventing disease. Carnosine bound to zinc, called polaprezinc, is an approved prescription drug for stomach ulcers in Japan. That is a different molecule, in a different country, for a different use, and it gives carnosine itself no legal standing.

Registers or lists medicines and health products on the ARTG, its official register. It also sorts substances into schedules in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only). So having them without a prescription, or importing them for yourself, is restricted. That is true even when no product is registered.

Whether Carnosine is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in Australia. Before you compete or get tested, look up Carnosine by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
