Direct answer

Carnosine can be sold in the United Kingdom as a supplement or cosmetic ingredient, classified as "Sold as a supplement". That is not drug approval: MHRA has not evaluated any health claim, and injectable or "research use only" versions fall outside supplement rules, so that label does not make human use lawful. On the evidence, 2 human studies are cited on its profile.

What this means

  • 01

Carnosine can be sold in the United Kingdom as a supplement, food or cosmetic ingredient under the classification above, without drug approval.

  • 02

Supplement status means MHRA has not evaluated any health claim; manufacturers are responsible for safety and labeling, and quality varies by product.

  • 03

Injectable or "research use only" versions are not supplements. That label does not make human use lawful, and injectables fall under medicines rules.

What Carnosine is

An endogenous dipeptide sold as an anti-ageing supplement with no approval anywhere for any indication. Its largest randomised trial, 299 participants on 2 g a day, found no difference on any physical performance measure overall, with scattered significance only in age and sex subgroups. Serum carnosinase breaks most of an oral dose down before it reaches muscle, which is why the real evidence base sits with beta-alanine instead.

Carnosine is beta-alanyl-L-histidine, a dipeptide the body makes and concentrates in skeletal muscle and brain. It is sold widely as an anti-ageing and anti-glycation supplement, often alongside the prescription medicines on neighbouring pages of this archive and in similar language.

Mechanism: Carnosine acts inside cells as a pH buffer in the physiological range, which is why it is concentrated in skeletal muscle where anaerobic work generates protons, and as a scavenger of reactive carbonyl species and aldehydes, which is the basis of the anti-glycation claims made for it. It also chelates transition metals.

Regulatory history: Not an approved drug anywhere. Carnosine is sold in the United States as a dietary supplement, which means it is not evaluated by the FDA for efficacy and cannot lawfully be marketed for treating or preventing disease. Its zinc chelate, polaprezinc, is an approved prescription drug for gastric ulcer in Japan, which is a different molecule, a different country and a different indication, and confers no regulatory status on carnosine itself.

How MHRA treats this kind of product

Licenses medicines for the UK market. A compound without a marketing authorisation is an unlicensed medicine, which can only lawfully be supplied for human use through a prescriber under the specials scheme, not sold as a research product.

The classification above is the The Longevity Archive reading of Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency listings for Carnosine at the reviewed date, not a legal opinion. Rules change, and importing, prescribing and possessing a compound can each be treated differently. Check the regulator directly before acting on anything here.
