Is Clusterin legal in the United Kingdom?

A blood protein that goes up with exercise. In old mice and in mice with an Alzheimer-like illness, it calmed brain inflammation. It is higher in people who exercise. The only trials in people that changed it on purpose pushed it down, for cancer, and one stopped early.

Nobody has been given clusterin as a treatment. The record in people runs the opposite way to the exercise idea, and should never be quoted as supporting it.

How it works: In mice, clusterin injected into a vein sticks to the cells lining blood vessels in the brain and quietens inflammation genes there, both in a fast brain inflammation model and in an Alzheimer model. In the same paper, exercising animals show a coordinated rise in a set of brakes on the complement system, part of the immune system.

Approval history: Clusterin has never been given to a person as a treatment, and it is not approved anywhere. The only drug aimed at clusterin to reach human studies is custirsen. It lowers clusterin, was developed for cancer, and is not approved.

Licenses medicines for sale in the UK. A compound without a licence to be sold (a marketing authorisation) is an unlicensed medicine. The law only lets it reach people through a prescriber, under the specials scheme (unlicensed medicines made for one patient's needs). It cannot be sold as a research product.

Whether Clusterin is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in the United Kingdom. Before you compete or get tested, look up Clusterin by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
