Is DT2216 legal in Canada?

Built to fix navitoclax's platelet problem. It hands the target protein to a cell tool that platelets barely have. In its first study, in 20 people with solid cancers, only one had a dose-limiting problem: a severe platelet drop that cleared within 48 hours.

Navitoclax kills worn-out cells and platelets, the blood cells that stop bleeding, by hitting the same protein, BCL-xL. DT2216 was designed around that.

How it works: Shown in human cells and mice, with the platelet sparing now backed by the first study in people: DT2216 grabs BCL-xL and pulls in a cell tool called VHL. VHL tags BCL-xL so the cell destroys it.

Approval history: Not approved. Still being tested as a cancer drug. The first early safety study in people is done. It set a dose for mid-stage studies of 0.4 mg/kg, given into a vein twice a week. No study for ageing or for clearing worn-out cells is registered.

Allows a drug to be sold by issuing a Notice of Compliance and a Drug Identification Number (DIN). A compound that is not allowed for sale cannot legally be sold for use in people. Bringing in prescription drugs for your own use is also limited.

Whether DT2216 is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in Canada. Before you compete or get tested, look up DT2216 by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
