Psyllium dosage and evidence
Written by Aaron CuhaReviewed Sep 2026
The short answer
A fiber that lowered LDL in a meta-analysis of 8 controlled trials as an adjunct to diet. Surrogate lipids, not events. Take it with water. Ask a pharmacist about other oral medicines.

Dose
No human dose established
No published study on this page has given this compound to people and reported a result.
no study of any kind on record
No first-hand reports gathered yet. That is a gap in what we have collected, not a finding that nothing has been reported.
What it has been measured to do
Nothing indexed yet
The 1 citation on this page do not report a result for any of the 36 goals indexed here. Registry entries, pharmacokinetics, safety reporting and regulatory records are not outcome evidence, and most of what sits here is one of those.
When this earns a spot
It matters as a fiber that lowered LDL in a meta-analysis of 8 controlled trials as an adjunct to diet. It does not matter as an event-proven heart drug. Gut obstruction risk, swallowing problems, and a medicine list that needs spacing are clinician and pharmacist gates.
Bloodwork that belongs beside the bottle
Lipids, and fasting glucose or A1c if that is also the question. Surrogates only.
Default retest window: 90 days. If the named marker did not move, stop.
- Take it with water. Dry powder is the wrong experiment.
- It can change how other oral medicines absorb. Ask the pharmacist.
Reading the number
If LDL-C and ApoB did not move, stop. A modest LDL drop is the published effect, not a promise about heart attacks.
Marker glossary: LDL cholesterol, ApoB, HbA1c.
What people typically order
Ask for a lipid panel and ApoB. Same doorway as the high-ApoB playbook.

Overview
Psyllium husk is a soluble fiber. Anderson 2000 pooled 8 controlled trials of psyllium added to diet in men and women with high cholesterol and reported lower total and LDL cholesterol. That is the human file this stub leads with.
It is not an outcome trial of heart attacks. It is not a statin. It is not harmless dry. Without water it is a choking and obstruction risk. It can change how other oral medicines absorb, which is a pharmacist conversation, not a footnote.
The owner's lipid conversation is ApoB and pattern B. Psyllium is one adjunct that can move LDL a little. If ApoB does not move in ninety days, stop.
Mechanism of action
Viscous soluble fiber binds bile acids in the gut. The liver uses more cholesterol to replace them, which can lower circulating LDL. Gut transit and glucose absorption can also change. Mechanism is not an event trial.
Human evidence
The lipid-lowering adjunct file is real and old. The event file is not on this stub.
- Anderson 2000: LDL down as an adjunct to diet in 8 trials.
- No cardiovascular-outcome trial of psyllium is cited here.
What this does not tell you: Hypercholesterolemia trials are not a general longevity mandate. Swallowing disorders, bowel obstruction risk, and medicine spacing are outside a dose table this page will not print. A later pass can add glucose-endpoint trials if verified.

What this page cites instead is 1 review. None of it involved giving the compound to a person.
Counted from the citation list on this page. A figure is drawn here only when a human study is cited; an empty one is the finding, not a gap in the page.

None of the 1 citation here is human work.
- Review · summarises other work1100%
Counted from the citation list on this page, typed as this page types it. It understates any literature larger than the sources we cite, and a review counts once however many studies it covers.
Fig. 2 · evidence over time
Every citation here was published in 2000.
Too few distinct publication years on this page to plot as a timeline. The newest citation on file is from 2000, more than five years ago; the published record may have gone quiet.

Fig. 4 · dose response
No human dose response curve exists
We draw this figure where the data supports it. For this compound in humans it does not, so the panel stays empty rather than borrowing an animal curve and implying it transfers.

No amino acid sequence is on file for Psyllium, which is expected: a supplement is not built from residues.
Key studies & citations
- Review2000Cholesterol-lowering effects of psyllium intake adjunctive to diet therapy in men and women with hypercholesterolemia: meta-analysis of 8 controlled trials.
8 controlled trials, psyllium plus diet. Lower total and LDL cholesterol. Surrogate lipids. Not an event trial.
Frequently asked questions
Has Psyllium been tested in people?
A fiber that lowered LDL in a meta-analysis of 8 controlled trials as an adjunct to diet. Surrogate lipids, not events. Take it with water. Ask a pharmacist about other oral medicines. no study of any kind on record. 0 people given it across 0 completed trials. 0 found nothing.
What is the Psyllium dosage?
No human dose established. No published study on this page has given this compound to people and reported a result. no study of any kind on record
Is Psyllium FDA-approved?
Sold as a fiber supplement and as an over-the-counter bulk-forming laxative. Not approved to prevent cardiovascular events.
Can this replace a statin?
No. It is a diet-adjunct fiber with LDL data. Event-proven therapy stays with the clinician.
What marker do I watch?
LDL-C and, better, ApoB. If they did not move at ninety days, stop.
