What ANP is
ANP is a hormone the heart releases when its chambers stretch. It is why the heart counts as a hormone-making organ. A lab-made form, carperitide, is used for sudden heart failure in Japan. A 2025 review pooled 9 studies and found more people died in hospital on carperitide.
Atrial natriuretic peptide, or ANP, is a hormone 28 building blocks long. Cells in the heart's upper chambers release it when the chamber walls stretch.
How it works: In people, ANP docks on a receptor called NPR-A. That raises a messenger called cyclic GMP inside blood vessel and kidney cells.
