Is Beta-2 Microglobulin legal in Australia?
Written by Aaron CuhaReviewed Sep 2026
Direct answer
No. Beta-2 Microglobulin is not an approved medicine in Australia; its classification is "Research use only; not registered". Nothing containing it is authorized for any use in people. Vials labeled "for research use only" are not exempt: that label does not make human use lawful. On the evidence, 1 human study is cited on its profile.

What this means
- 01
No product containing Beta-2 Microglobulin is approved by TGA for any use in Australia, so nothing on the market is authorized for people.
- 02
"Research use only" is a vendor label, not a legal category that permits human use. It does not exempt a product from medicines law.
- 03
Importing, supplying or promoting it for human use can fall under medicines legislation in Australia. This page is general information, not legal advice.
What Beta-2 Microglobulin is
A blood protein that rises with age and impairs neurogenesis and memory when injected into young mice. In people it is a long-established clinical analyte and is associated with worse cognition; nobody has tried lowering it for ageing.
Beta-2 microglobulin is the light chain of MHC class I molecules and is present in everyone's blood. A 2015 Nature Medicine paper identified it as a circulating pro-ageing factor: B2M is elevated in the blood of ageing humans and mice and in the hippocampus of aged mice and young heterochronic parabionts.
Mechanism: In mice, systemic or intrahippocampal B2M impairs hippocampal-dependent cognition and neurogenesis, effects partly mitigated by reducing cell-surface MHC class I. The 2023 molecular work identifies B2M as an endogenous NMDA receptor antagonist acting through the GluN1-S2 loop, with competitive peptides restoring receptor-dependent synaptic function.
Regulatory history: No B2M-lowering therapy is approved for ageing or cognition and none is in a registered trial for those uses. B2M is measured clinically as a laboratory analyte in renal and haematological medicine.
How TGA treats this kind of product
Registers or lists therapeutic goods on the ARTG and schedules substances in the Poisons Standard. Many peptides are Schedule 4 (prescription only), so possession without a prescription and personal importation are restricted even when no product is registered.
The classification above is the The Longevity Archive reading of Therapeutic Goods Administration listings for Beta-2 Microglobulin at the reviewed date, not a legal opinion. Rules change, and importing, prescribing and possessing a compound can each be treated differently. Check the regulator directly before acting on anything here.

Is Beta-2 Microglobulin legal in Australia?
No. Beta-2 Microglobulin is not an approved medicine in Australia; its classification is "Research use only; not registered". Nothing containing it is authorized for any use in people. Can I buy Beta-2 Microglobulin in Australia?
No approved product exists to buy. In Australia Beta-2 Microglobulin is classified as "Research use only; not registered", so there is no licensed pharmacy product. Vendors selling it "for research use only" are not selling it for human use, and that label does not change its legal status. This site does not list or recommend vendors.
Is Beta-2 Microglobulin TGA approved?
No. In Australia Beta-2 Microglobulin is classified as "Research use only; not registered", which is not a TGA marketing approval. For comparison, the US FDA status is: No B2M-lowering therapy is approved for ageing or cognition and none is in a registered trial for those uses. B2M is measured clinically as a laboratory analyte in renal and haematological medicine.. On the evidence, 1 human study is cited on its profile.
