Liver enzymes

Also called ALT, AST, GGT.

Enzymes that leak into blood when liver cells are stressed. GGT also rises with alcohol and bile-duct stress.

Why a longevity audience asks

The owner's NAC rule waits on stressed liver enzymes. High-dose green-tea extract has a liver-risk conversation. This is monitoring, not a detox protocol.

How a coach reads it

Labs print their own upper limits. A small isolated bump is not a diagnosis. Repeatedly high ALT or AST, or any jaundice, is a clinician problem the same week, not a NAC shopping trip.

When it is low

Low values are rarely a target.

When it is high

Means the liver is unhappy or a muscle is leaking AST. Alcohol, viruses, medicines, fat in the liver, and some supplements can all do it. NAC is a prescription drug for paracetamol overdose. That evidence does not automatically transfer to a wellness capsule.

Easy ways to misread it

  • AST also lives in muscle. A hard workout can lift it.
  • Do not start a new 'liver support' stack on a high GGT. Stop alcohol and see a clinician.

What to ask a clinician

Ask for ALT, AST, GGT, and alkaline phosphatase. Bring the bottle list, including teas and 'fat burner' capsules.
