Fasting insulin
Also called HOMA-IR context.
Insulin in the morning after a fast. With fasting glucose it is how people estimate insulin resistance. It is not a universal screening test.

- Coach, not doctor. Aaron Cuha is a coach, not a doctor. No clinical credential is claimed for him, or for these pages. A number on a panel is a conversation starter with a clinician, not a DIY diagnosis. Nothing here is a prescription, a protocol, or a reason to start or stop a medicine. Educational use only. This database summarizes published research and is not medical advice. Where a dose appears it is a record of what a trial or clinic ran, or what people describe doing, with its source attached. Nothing here is a recommendation for personal use.
- Affiliate disclosure. Knowledge stays free. Every page, every guide and every tool is free to read and stays free. Lab-panel affiliate links, when they exist, live on /bloodwork/partners and print what is earned on the row, or that nothing is earned today. This glossary does not sell panels. The Archive does not order labs.
- Three lab stories stay separate. /bloodwork is the human panel. /testing and /prices/labs are peptide certificate chemistry. /supplements/quality is what is in the bottle.
Why a longevity audience asks
The owner's own record published a fasting-insulin drop. It is a useful conversation number for resistance. It is not a license to build a stack.
How a coach reads it
Labs disagree on intervals. Many clinicians talk about single-digit or low-teens uIU/mL as more insulin-sensitive and higher teens and above as more resistant, always with glucose beside it. Those are conversation ranges. HOMA-IR is a calculation, not a diagnosis you owe a bottle.
Units on this page: uIU/mL, pmol/L
When it is low
Low insulin with high glucose is a different, more urgent clinician problem than high insulin with high glucose.
When it is high
Often means the pancreas is pushing hard to keep glucose in range. Training and diet are the first conversation. Berberine is optional and later.
Easy ways to misread it
- Assays differ. Compare you to you on the same lab.
- A non-fasting insulin is a different test.
What to ask a clinician
Ask for fasting insulin on the same morning as fasting glucose. Ask whether HOMA-IR is worth calculating on those two numbers.
