Direct answer

No. Klotho is not an approved medicine in the United Kingdom. Its legal category is "Not licensed". Nothing that contains it is allowed for any use in people. Vials labeled "for research use only" get no exception: that label does not make them legal to use in people. On the evidence, no completed trial in people is cited on its profile (2 human records with no result or no dose given).

What this means

  • 01

No product containing Klotho is approved by MHRA for any use in the United Kingdom. So nothing on sale is allowed for use in people.

  • 02

"Research use only" is a label sellers put on. It is not a legal category that allows use in people, and it does not get a product out of medicines law.

  • 03

Importing it, supplying it or promoting it for use in people can fall under medicines law in the United Kingdom. This page is general information, not legal advice.

What Klotho is

Nobody has given klotho to a person in a published study. People with higher blood levels tend to live longer and think better. A gene therapy is heading toward studies in people. Products sold online as klotho peptide are not the protein that was studied.

First, a mix-up almost every article makes. Alpha-klotho and beta-klotho are different genes that make different proteins.

How it works: Loose klotho in the blood works with the hormone FGF23. It also tunes the insulin and IGF-1 signals, the Wnt signal, and the body's defence against oxidation.

Approval history: No approved product; a gene therapy that has not yet asked the FDA to start human studies (pre-IND)

How MHRA treats this kind of product

Licenses medicines for sale in the UK. A compound without a licence to be sold (a marketing authorisation) is an unlicensed medicine. The law only lets it reach people through a prescriber, under the specials scheme (unlicensed medicines made for one patient's needs). It cannot be sold as a research product.

The legal category above is how The Longevity Archive reads Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency listings for Klotho on the reviewed date. It is not a legal opinion. Rules change. Bringing a compound into the country, prescribing it and owning it can each be treated differently. Check with the agency before you act on anything here.

Klotho in sport and the military

Whether Klotho is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in the United Kingdom. Before you compete or get tested, look up Klotho by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.

The rules you compete or serve under decide this, not this page.

Can I buy Klotho in the United Kingdom?

For comparison, its US FDA status is: No approved product; a gene therapy that has not yet asked the FDA to start human studies (pre-IND). On the evidence, no completed trial in people is cited on its profile (2 human records with no result or no dose given).
