When the omega-3 index is low

A low omega-3 index usually means oily fish and EPA/DHA have not been part of the week. It is a food-and-capsule status number, not a heart-attack diagnosis.

Read this first

  • Coach, not doctor. Aaron Cuha is a coach, not a doctor. No clinical credential is claimed for him, or for these pages. A number on a panel is a conversation starter with a clinician, not a DIY diagnosis. Nothing here is a prescription, a protocol, or a reason to start or stop a medicine. Educational use only. This database summarizes published research and is not medical advice. Where a dose appears it is a record of what a trial or clinic ran, or what people describe doing, with its source attached. Nothing here is a recommendation for personal use.
  • Affiliate disclosure. Knowledge stays free. Every page, every guide and every tool is free to read and stays free. Lab-panel affiliate links, when they exist, live on /bloodwork/partners and print what is earned on the row, or that nothing is earned today. This glossary does not sell panels. The Archive does not order labs.
  • Three lab stories stay separate. /bloodwork is the human panel. /testing and /prices/labs are peptide certificate chemistry. /supplements/quality is what is in the bottle.

The coach gate

Name the number, decide with a clinician whether food first or a capsule is even the next step, then retest. Do not swallow REDUCE-IT as a reason to buy grocery fish oil.

What this does not mean

It does not mean you should start 4 grams of icosapent ethyl. That is a prescription drug trial in statin-treated patients with high triglycerides. It does not mean a higher index will prevent events. STRENGTH was null on a different high-dose omega-3 against corn oil.

Markers to put on the requisition

Candidate supplements, not orders

What people typically order

Ask a clinician for an omega-3 index, or red-cell EPA and DHA. Direct-to-consumer panels that include it are listed on /bloodwork/partners when that directory is live. The Archive does not order the draw.

Stopping rule

Retest at about ninety days. If the index did not move, stop the bottle and look at the product and the dose with the clinician. If it moved into the conversation band you agreed, stay loyal to the number, not to a brand.
