Desmopressin is a lab-made copy of vasopressin, the hormone that makes you hold on to water. It keeps the water effect without raising blood pressure. It is sold as DDAVP for diabetes insipidus, bedwetting and some bleeding disorders. It has also been tested for getting up at night to pee. It is approved and prescription only.
What people take it for

What studies in people showed
The biggest source is a 2025 review that pooled 95 studies in children who wet the bed. It cut wet nights by about 1.8 a week compared with a dummy. The evidence was low to moderate quality. In 261 women who got up twice or more a night to pee, a low dose cut night trips a little. It gave them about 49 more minutes before the first trip. Three women's blood salt dropped to a level that needs watching. In 1977, a first report showed it raised a clotting protein enough to allow surgery in mild bleeding disorders.

Desmopressin is a lab-made copy of vasopressin. It works on the kidney's water-keeping switch without raising blood pressure the way the natural hormone does. It is FDA-approved as DDAVP for central diabetes insipidus, bedwetting at night, and to boost clotting in mild haemophilia and von Willebrand disease. For bedwetting, a 2025 Cochrane review of 95 studies found about 1.8 fewer wet nights a week than a dummy, on low to moderate quality evidence. In 261 women who got up twice or more a night to pee, a low dose cut night trips a little and added about 49 minutes before the first trip. Three women's blood salt fell to a level that needs watching. The bleeding use goes back to 1977. That report showed it raised clotting factor VIII enough to allow surgery. It works by releasing stored factor VIII, von Willebrand factor and t-PA.
How does Desmopressin work?
It switches on only the kidney's V2 receptor. That makes urine more concentrated. It also releases stored clotting factor VIII and von Willebrand factor.

This is the paper that turned a synthetic hormone into a bleeding treatment. Giving DDAVP raised the clotting protein that people with mild haemophilia and von Willebrand disease are short of. It rose enough that surgery became possible. That was a genuine change in what these patients could safely do. It is a first report from the 1970s and it reads like one, describing what happened rather than testing it against a comparison group.

Desmopressin helped women who keep waking at night to urinate, and the help is smaller than it sounds. 261 women who were getting up at least twice a night took a low dose tablet daily for three months. On average they got up about a fifth of a time less each night. They were close to twice as likely to see a meaningful improvement, and gained about 49 minutes before the first trip. Three women had their blood sodium fall to a level that needs watching.
261 women with two or more nocturnal voids took 25 micrograms daily for three months. Desmopressin reduced mean nocturnal voids (-0.22, p=0.028), raised the odds of a 33% or greater response (OR 1.85, p=0.006) and added 49 minutes to the time before the first nocturnal void, with three transient falls in serum sodium below 130 mmol/L.
