What is Oxytocin?

How does Oxytocin work?

It switches on oxytocin receptors. In the womb, that causes contractions. In the breast, it lets milk flow. In the brain, it changes how people process social and emotional cues.

What do people who took Oxytocin report?

This is what real people say happened to them, good and bad. Nobody measured it. A report cannot tell a real effect from the lift people get just from expecting it to work, from a diet or training change made at the same time, or from what was really in the vial. We still put it near the top. It is the next best thing to a study in people: what happens when real people use it, including what goes wrong.

• Disappointment is the dominant pattern, and it is unusual to see it this plainly on a forum. Threads that open by asking for experiences fill up with curiosity rather than experiences, people describe trying it once and noticing nothing, and others describe stopping because it did nothing for the problem they bought it for.
• Nasal spray is what almost everyone describes using, with a pump commonly described as delivering ten international units. A shot under the skin of a few micrograms several times a day appears occasionally, and dissolving lozenges and pharmacy mixed products are mentioned.
• Where people do describe something, it is social and emotional rather than sexual: more empathy, more generosity, a mild loosening, better overall mood noticed by a partner over months. The people describing it usually flag themselves that they might be reading into it.
• Specific negatives described include a racing heart, and an account of erectile function being suppressed by it even while orgasm became easier. Product quality is a recurring complaint, with consumer marketplace sprays described as weaker between batches or after storage, and cold chain shipping raised as both a cost and a reason to doubt what arrives.
• A framing repeated by several posters is that the published literature looks more supportive in women than in men, and clinicians are described as having backed away from prescribing it because they were unsure what to do with it.
• The recurring practical outcome in these threads is people being pointed toward something else entirely for libido, which tells you how the group rates it.

  Pitocin (oxytocin injection, USP): prescribing information

  This is the regulator's instruction sheet, not a study. It approves oxytocin given into a vein or a muscle, in hospital, to start or strengthen contractions during childbirth and to control heavy bleeding afterwards. That is the whole approved use. Nothing on this label covers the nasal spray sold for trust, bonding, social anxiety or relationships. Those uses are not approved anywhere, and the approval of the injection is not evidence for them.

  Intranasal oxytocin in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder

  Oxytocin nasal spray was tested properly in autism and it did not work. Two hundred and ninety children and teenagers used the spray or a dummy every day for about six months, and nobody involved knew which. Social withdrawal, the thing the trial was built to move, was no better on oxytocin. Nothing else measured came out differently either. A trial this size would have found a worthwhile benefit if there was one. This is the strongest test the idea has had.

  24-week Phase 2 RCT in 290 children: no significant difference from placebo on social withdrawal (least-squares mean difference minus 0.2) or secondary social and cognitive measures.

  Prophylactic oxytocin for the third stage of labour to prevent postpartum haemorrhage

  A review that pooled studies of oxytocin given right after birth. Compared with giving no drug to tighten the womb, oxytocin probably cuts blood loss after birth and the need for extra drugs.

  Prophylactic oxytocin compared with no uterotonic probably reduces postpartum blood loss and the need for additional uterotonics.

  Oxytocin and autism spectrum disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

  A review that pooled 12 studies of oxytocin in autism. It found no clear effect on social thinking or repeated behaviours, even though some single studies had looked good.

  Meta-analysis of 12 RCTs found no significant effect of oxytocin on social cognition or repetitive behaviors despite positive individual studies.
