Is BPC-157 legal in the United Kingdom?

A lab-made piece of a stomach protein. It has lots of animal studies on tendon, muscle and gut healing. In people there is very little: two enema studies in Croatia, three small clinic reports with nobody to compare against, and one injury study with a dummy group that is still signing people up.

BPC-157 is a chain of 15 amino acids taken from a protein in human stomach juice. People have taken it in studies, but not many.

How it works: In animals, BPC-157 helps grow new blood vessels. It works with nitric oxide, a gas the body uses to widen blood vessels.

Approval history: Not FDA-approved. In April 2026 the FDA took it off Category 2, its list of pharmacy ingredients with safety worries. In July 2026 the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted 8 to 6, with one member abstaining, in favor of letting pharmacies make it. The FDA's own reviewers had advised against that. The FDA has not acted yet

Licenses medicines for sale in the UK. A compound without a licence to be sold (a marketing authorisation) is an unlicensed medicine. The law only lets it reach people through a prescriber, under the specials scheme (unlicensed medicines made for one patient's needs). It cannot be sold as a research product.

Whether BPC-157 is banned in sport is set by the World Anti-Doping Code and by military rules, not by its legal status in the United Kingdom. Before you compete or get tested, look up BPC-157 by name on the Prohibited List, or look up a named product in Global DRO. Under the World Anti-Doping Code, category S0 bans, at all times, any drug-like substance that meets two tests. No other section of the List covers it. And no government health regulator anywhere has a current approval for it as a treatment in people. Many substances that are approved somewhere are banned by name in another section. So approval does not mean a substance is allowed in sport.
