Goserelin is a small implant placed under the skin. For one to three months, it releases a drug that shuts down your sex hormones. It is sold as Zoladex for prostate cancer, hormone-driven breast cancer and endometriosis. It is a prescription medicine, not a research peptide.

What studies in people showed
In a European study, men with high-risk prostate cancer got radiotherapy, with or without three years of this drug. Ten years later, 47.7 percent of the drug group were alive and free of cancer. Only 22.7 percent of the radiotherapy-only group were. More of them were alive at all. In women with oestrogen-driven breast cancer, it did as well as a standard chemotherapy course for keeping cancer from coming back. It was easier to tolerate.

Goserelin is a GnRH drug approved as Zoladex and used for decades. It comes as a small implant placed under the skin that releases the drug over one to three months. The steady signal wears out the pituitary gland's response. After a short burst, it lowers LH, FSH, testosterone and oestrogen. That is why it is used in prostate cancer, hormone-driven breast cancer and endometriosis. In a European prostate cancer study, men got radiotherapy with or without three years of goserelin. Ten years later, 47.7% of the goserelin group were alive and free of disease, against 22.7% with radiotherapy alone. More of them were alive at all. A monthly injection did the same job as chemotherapy, with less harm. Women who had not yet reached the menopause, with breast cancer that had reached the lymph nodes, were split by chance between goserelin and a standard three drug chemotherapy course. Among women whose tumours were driven by oestrogen, the two came out the same for time lived without the cancer returning, and the injection was easier to tolerate. That equal footing was found only in oestrogen driven tumours. It does not extend to the rest.
In ER-positive patients goserelin was equivalent to CMF chemotherapy for disease-free survival (HR 1.01) and better tolerated.

Adding three years of hormone treatment to radiotherapy roughly doubled the number of men still free of their cancer a decade later. Men with prostate cancer at high risk of spreading were split by chance into two groups. Ten years on, 47.7 percent of those given goserelin as well were alive and free of disease, against 22.7 percent of those who had radiotherapy alone. More of them were alive at all. Three years of it is a heavy price, and this result is why doctors accept it.
Adding 3 years of goserelin to radiotherapy raised 10-year disease-free survival from 22.7% to 47.7% and improved overall survival.
