GLP-2 is a gut hormone you release with GLP-1 after meals. It does not do much for blood sugar. Its job is to grow and repair the lining of your gut. Your body breaks it down in about seven minutes. A longer-lasting copy, teduglutide, is an approved drug for short bowel syndrome.

What studies in people showed

GLP-2 is a gut hormone released with GLP-1 after meals. Its main job is not blood sugar. It helps the gut lining grow, repair itself and get more blood flow. There are no human studies of it on this page. In mice, it was found in 1996 to be the signal that makes the lining of the small gut grow. Later work found it increases blood flow to the gut, food absorption and the gut's barrier. The body breaks it down in about seven minutes. That is why a longer-lasting copy, teduglutide, was made. That copy is FDA-approved for short bowel syndrome. GLP-2 itself is a natural hormone, not a drug on the market.
How does GLP-2 work?
It switches on GLP-2 receptors. That makes the gut lining grow, slows the death of gut cells and strengthens the gut's barrier.
