On the top dose, 87 percent lost at least 5 percent. The company says people on the top dose lost 15.4 percent after 48 weeks. A year-long study put it up against dulaglutide in type 2 diabetes. Everyone in these studies was Chinese.

Ecnoglutide is a long-acting GLP-1 shot, approved in China in 2026 for type 2 diabetes and weight loss. It is not approved in the US.
Ecnoglutide is a long-acting drug in the same GLP-1 family as Ozempic. It was developed mainly in China. In a large final-stage study, 664 Chinese adults lost 9.1 to 13.2 percent of their body weight in 40 weeks, depending on the dose. People on a dummy shot lost 0.1 percent. China's regulator approved it in January 2026 for type 2 diabetes and in March 2026 for weight management. Those were its first approvals anywhere. Because it lasts a long time in the body, it is being studied to see if shots can be given less often than once a week. It is not approved in the US.
How does Ecnoglutide work?
It turns on the GLP-1 signal and stays in the body a long time. That helps control blood sugar and cuts appetite.

It worked, in a full sized trial. 664 Chinese adults lost between 9 and 13 percent of their body weight over 40 weeks, depending on the dose, while the dummy group lost essentially nothing. Nearly nine in ten on the top dose lost at least 5 percent. One thing to hold in mind. Everyone in this trial was Chinese, so read it as evidence in that population.

This trial set the drug against dulaglutide, an established weekly injection, in people with type 2 diabetes already taking metformin. It ran for a year, and it was designed to show the newcomer was not worse rather than that it was better. That is a lower bar. It is also the right bar to set when a good treatment already exists.

China's regulator approved it for weight management in March 2026. The company reports an average weight loss of about 15 percent after 48 weeks on the top dose, nearly all of it over and above what the dummy group lost. An approval is a real milestone. It is also specific to one country, and it is not the same thing as approval where you live.
