This is how I would explain it to a friend. The evidence, with the numbers, is further down the page.
Pinealon is a three amino acid peptide sold for the brain. Almost all the data on it is cells in a dish and rats. There is one small Russian study of 32 people. It comes from the St Petersburg institute that sells this whole family of peptides. It is not approved.
What people take it for
- Sharper memory and focus.
- Protecting brain cells from stress and low oxygen as they age.
- Slowing down brain ageing in general.
- A stack with Semax or Selank for a bigger brain boost.
What studies in people showed
The only human study had 32 patients. They were elderly people with several long term illnesses and old brain damage. It was run in Russia by the group that makes the peptide. It measured markers of biological age, not memory or thinking. It gave Pinealon together with a second peptide called Vesugen, so nobody can say which one did what. Nobody outside that group has ever tested it in a person. In rats, pups whose mothers had a harmful blood chemical during pregnancy did better on memory tests when given it. In cells under stress, it lowered the damaging free radicals and fewer cells died.
What people report
Reports, not study results
The good
- Subtle gains in mood, sleep and focus. One user wrote up 30 days on it and said he could concentrate longer without getting tired.
- Most people who like it stack it with Semax, Selank or Cerebrolysin, so the credit is shared.
The bad
- Most people say the effect is subtle, and many feel nothing at all.
- Sore or red skin where the needle went in.
- Headache, tiredness and flushing show up on vendor side effect lists. Those lists are generic for any injected peptide, not from a Pinealon study.
- There is no safety study of it in people, in any language the page could find.

My bottom line
One 32 person study from the people who sell it, and it did not even measure memory. I would not put this in my body on that.

Animal and lab work, not yet tested in people
Real results, but from animals or cells, not people. What works in a mouse often does not work the same way in a person. Nobody can patent this, so nobody would ever earn back the cost of a study in people. That is usually why there is none. The record on this one is set out below.

What is Pinealon?
Pinealon is a tiny lab-made peptide from Khavinson's group, studied for brain protection and thinking.
Pinealon is a lab-made peptide three building blocks long (Glu-Asp-Arg). Khavinson's school calls it a peptide bioregulator. It is studied for protecting the brain, standing up to cell stress and low oxygen, and thinking. Most of the work is Russian lab and animal work, plus small human studies. One study gave it, along with another peptide called Vesugen, to 32 older patients with several long-term illnesses. It measured markers said to show biological age. Nobody outside Russia has repeated it. In rats, it improved thinking in the young of mothers with high homocysteine, a harmful blood chemical. In a dish, it protected nerve cells from damage by harmful oxygen molecules. The evidence is early, and it is not approved.
How does Pinealon work?
It is thought to switch genes on or off in nerve cells and to protect them from harmful oxygen molecules and low oxygen.
What have studies in people found about Pinealon?
Pinealon's human record is three small Russian studies. None compared it with a dummy treatment given to a group picked by chance. None has been repeated by another group. In two of the three it was given with a second peptide, so its own part cannot be pulled out.
- Lorry drivers: researchers compared 150 male lorry drivers (average age 43.3) with 150 male metalworkers (average age 42.8) on a questionnaire about nervous and emotional symptoms. Inside that survey, they report that 'bioregulating' peptides restored people's ability to cope and improved emotional scores. The best result came from pinealon and vezugen given together. The peptide part sits inside a workplace survey, not a controlled trial.
- Several long-term illnesses (already cited on this page): 32 people aged 41 to 83 with several illnesses and brain changes took pinealon together with a second peptide, Vesugen. The authors report a building-up effect and slower aging on 'biological age' scores. In the same study they report the peptides pushing oxidation up on a light-based blood test, the opposite of an antioxidant. They also report a fall in blood stem cells (CD34+ cells), which they call a significant slowing of blood cell production. They judged Vesugen's effect the more visible of the two.
- Railway crews: workers took a capsule with 100 micrograms of pinealon twice a day for two weeks. The authors report better 'biological age' scores and better signs of coping with strain. The summary does not say how many workers took part or whether there was a comparison group.
- Everything else published on pinealon is lab-dish or rodent work, including the two lab papers already on this page.
What this does not tell you: Counting generously, fewer than 100 people in the published research have taken pinealon. The main measure is 'biological age', a score used in Russian aging research and not standard anywhere else. So the results cannot be lined up with any Western measure. Two of the three studies gave a second peptide at the same time. None reports assigning people by chance, hiding who got what, or a dummy treatment. And the one study that checked blood counts found a fall in blood stem cells. Nobody has followed that up, and it should not be ignored just because it came from a small study.
The state of the research
Pinealon is a three-amino-acid peptide (Glu-Asp-Arg) from the Khavinson school in St Petersburg. In Russia it is sold as a 'peptide bioregulator', a kind of supplement, not registered as a drug. That category explains the whole evidence base. A product sold as a supplement never has to file a safety and benefit file with regulators. So no trial was ever needed to sell it, and the usual pressure to run one never existed. Nearly all the research sits in Advances in Gerontology, the journal linked to the group that developed the peptide. That is not a sign of dishonesty. It is also not independent repetition.
A three-amino-acid peptide is about as impossible to own as a molecule gets. So there is no Western company that could earn back the cost of testing it. That means the lack of independent trials tells you nothing about whether pinealon works. It is what you would expect for any three-amino-acid chain, working or not. Reading it as a verdict either way is a mistake.
What can be said plainly is how much evidence exists and what kind. The marketing claims are brain protection, keeping the mind sharp and slower aging. In people, they rest on a few dozen supervised people in studies with no comparison group, reported by the group that created the compound. The rest is lab-dish and rodent work. That is a statement about how much evidence there is and how it was gathered. It is not a statement that the peptide fails, because nobody has run the study that could show that either.

The studies we cite

A small study, from one country, that nobody else has repeated. Thirty two older patients with several long term illnesses were given these peptides, and markers said to reflect biological age were measured. Markers are not health. Nothing here says anyone lived longer, felt better or avoided an illness. Thirty two people is too few to tell a real change from chance, and no team outside Russia has tried to repeat it.

This report does not say how many people took pinealon. Railway crew workers swallowed a capsule twice a day for two weeks, and the authors report better scores on a Russian index of biological age and of how well the body copes with strain. The published summary gives no group size and describes no comparison group. The literature is genuine and it sits in Russian journals, with no Western replication. There is not enough here to weigh.
Locomotive brigade workers took one capsule containing 100 micrograms of Pinealon twice daily for two weeks, after which the authors report improved biological-age parameters and adaptive reaction indicators. The abstract gives no group size and describes no control arm.

The peptide part of this study sits inside a workplace survey, not a trial. Researchers compared 150 male lorry drivers with 150 male metalworkers of the same age on a questionnaire about nervous and emotional symptoms. Inside that survey they report that bioregulating peptides restored the body's capacity to cope and improved emotional scores, best when pinealon and vezugen were given together. Nobody was assigned by chance and no dummy capsule was used. Two peptides at once means pinealon's own contribution cannot be separated.
150 lorry drivers compared with 150 metal craftsmen on a neurotic states questionnaire, with bioregulating peptides reported to restore adaptive potential and improve psychoemotional indices, best in the pinealon and vezugen combination. The peptide arm sits inside an occupational survey, not a controlled trial.

Nobody was given anything in this paper. It argues the case for how the three amino acid peptide in pinealon might work, using gene activity and protein production measured in cells and molecular models. It is a mechanism story, and it is explicitly not evidence in people. Read it as a description of what researchers think could happen, not as a finding about anybody who took the compound.
