Why are peptides important in medicine and research?

Peptides sit between small drugs and large proteins, so they can be precise about which receptor they hit while still being made cheaply enough to manufacture at scale. That combination has already produced some of the highest grossing drugs in the world, the GLP-1 receptor agonists for diabetes and obesity, plus approved treatments for HIV related fat loss, hepatitis, sexual dysfunction, and a rare light sensitivity disorder. Most compounds sold as research peptides have not reached that bar.
