How does cortexin work?

Cortexin is a mixture of low-molecular-weight peptides extracted from the cerebral cortex of cattle. This site's profile proposes neurotrophic signaling and neuroprotection. Half-life varies because it is a mixture. There is no single molecular weight. The one human citation on that page is a Russian clinical study of repeated low-dose Cortexin courses in hemispheric ischemic stroke, not independently replicated outside that tradition. It is used clinically in Russia and nearby countries and is not FDA approved. A 2021 rodent comparison found Cortexin showed neuroprotective activity in acute and chronic ischemia models against Cerebrolysin and Actovegin.
