How does humanin work?

Humanin is a 24-amino-acid peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA. Molecular weight on this site's profile is about 2,687 daltons. Half-life is listed as short. No published study has given humanin, or an analogue of it, to a person, so no human pharmacokinetic or receptor-binding measurement exists on that page. What exists is observational: circulating humanin declines with age; it was higher in 18 adult children of centenarians than in 19 age-matched controls; plasma humanin was 124.3 versus 204.8 pg/mL in 23 people with impaired fasting glucose versus 58 controls; 94 hemodialysis patients showed a U-shaped risk curve; and circulating humanin rose after one endurance session in 30 adults. Cell and animal papers describe cytoprotective signaling through IGFBP-3 and Bax, and insulin-sensitivity work through hypothalamic STAT-3 in rats.
