How does MOTS-c work?

MOTS-c is encoded within mitochondrial DNA and is thought to act on cellular energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity, based on its association with a common genetic variant, its response to exercise, and its changing levels across age and metabolic disease in observational human data. Whether administering it as a drug reproduces those associations is exactly what its first recruiting controlled trial is designed to test, not something the existing observational data can answer alone.
