How does ARA-290 work?

ARA-290, also called cibinetide, is an 11-amino-acid peptide derived from the tissue-protective region of erythropoietin. This site's profile says it selectively activates the innate repair receptor without stimulating red blood cell production. Half-life is listed as short. Molecular weight is about 1,257 daltons. A 22-person, 4-week intravenous pilot in sarcoidosis small-fiber neuropathy reported improved symptom scores and SF-36 pain and physical functioning. A 28-day subcutaneous blinded trial reported improved neuropathic symptoms and increased corneal small nerve fiber density. Phase 2b in 64 people found 4 mg/day significantly increased corneal nerve fiber area versus placebo, while pain improved in all groups, so the pain effect was not clearly separated from placebo. It is investigational and not FDA approved. An 11-amino-acid EPO helix B peptide was tissue-protective in stroke, renal, and nerve-injury models and was not erythropoietic.
