How does tirzepatide work?

Tirzepatide activates two receptors, GIP and GLP-1, rather than GLP-1 alone the way semaglutide does. In a head to head trial of nearly 1,900 people with type 2 diabetes, every tirzepatide dose lowered blood sugar further than semaglutide's 1 milligram dose and produced up to 5.5 kilograms more weight loss at the highest dose. That dual mechanism is the basis for its FDA approval in both diabetes and obesity.
