Exenatide, approved as Byetta, derived from a peptide called exendin-4 found in Gila monster venom. It established the entire GLP-1 receptor agonist drug class that semaglutide and tirzepatide later built on, and its own trials covered nearly 15,000 participants for glycemic control in type 2 diabetes.
